Netflix has dropped the trailer of its new docu-series Bad Boy Billionaires: India and by the first looks of the trailer, it seems that Netflix has got a winner on its hands. The trailer looks interesting to say the least and certainly sets up the expectations of viewers.
Bad Boy Billionaires is focussed on India’s 4 billionaires, (Vijay Mallya, Subrata Roy, Nirav Modi and Ramalinga Raju), their rise to building a huge empire, and the fall to finally end up (as of now) as convicts or fugitives.
The trailer shows us the glimpses of their glamorous pasts, their achievements and then how it all falls apart. In this 2:06 mins trailer, Netflix has managed to give a context and fair idea of the content which we can expect from the series.
The trailer first talks about how Vijay Mallya just kept on borrowing from public banks to make Kingfisher bigger and bigger, maintained his lavish lifestyle, throwing enviable parties and then, when the bubble bursts, escapes to the UK to avoid the law.
We then get to see Sahara’s Subrata Roy who convinced even the poors from small cities and villages to invest in him, through his millions of agents and then how that “Pyramid Scheme” just fell apart.
It then mentions Satyam’s Ramalinga Raju who, after building a very successful IT organisation, gave in to huge competition in the market and to survive it, to beat it started cooking books and bribing the auditors.
Lastly the trailer talks about Nirav Modi who tried to build India’s first luxury jewellery brand, generated funds and loans by bribing the bank officials and then evaded the law and moved to another country..
It establishes the common link between all these ex-billionaires – that they in one way or the other destroyed billions of dollars of taxpayers money and now are accused of India’s biggest finance crimes.
The trailer is power packed with to the point details and the lines as – The difference between a petty criminal and Vijay Mallya is that he wears a suit and throws lavish parties sums up the content.
FFC Take – Overall, we believe this series must be on your watchlist, for a brave attempt in the documentary genre which usually is a rarity in India. With the intriguing trailer and very good production values Netflix India deserves a pat on the back.
Bad Boy Billionaires : India, will stream on Netflix India from 02 September 2020.
