Synopsis
Red Chillies & Netflix original brings us Class of 83, which attempts to highlight the two important instance of Bombay (then) Rise of Organised crime (Emergence of Underworld) and Closing of Cotton Mills. The movie is based on Hussain Zaidi’s novel “Class of 83” the know novelist for most of India’s underworld adaptations including Black Friday This movie can also be termed as a good comeback for Bobby Deol (guest role) after doing all (Yamla Pagla Deewana) type of movies for years. This movie also scores in showing the training program inside Police academy (including Classroom training) which is first of its kind.
The Story Line
Movie starts with Nashik Police academy where dean Vijay Singh (Bobby Deol) is on “Punishment Posting” due to his past and now struggle with his own frustration. During this training program, he comes across 5 cadets (Varde, Jadhav, Surve, Shukla & Aslam Khan) who he thinks are different from others due to their qualities. He trained them under special training so that they can work being in system and clean the growth of organized crime from Mumbai. The story goes ahead a narrative from one of this Cadets Aslam Khan who talks about rise of these super cops and the way operations performed during that time
The Hits
Following are major positives we come across while watching this 98 min movie
Movie is technically very sound. Entire movie is been shot in pastel yellow shade to create the era of early 80’s. The costumes sets all goes well with the mood of movie and highlight setup of Mumbai of 80’s.
At the same time instances like postal department to identify, criminal network highlights how system work during that time.
Special mention for direction of Atul Sabharwal.
There are some praise worthy & impact making dialogues too which works as icing on cake in the movie.
The Misses
In most of the movies, we find that movie is lengthy, but here the short length of the movie is a major drawback. Due to which this movie does not give time for its characters to build and most of characters remain shallow. At the same time, there are lot of incidents to be covered but is done as a summary. Hence, I feel that this movie should had scope for characters to build for better impact.
Standout Scenes
There is a discussion among these 5 cops during dinner in restaurant where they talk about how cotton mills are getting closed in Mumbai. The expressions and the detailing during that discussion is amazing.
The first encounter performed at surroundings Mahim Dargah is Clap worthy.
The situation perfect dialogues one, which I find interesting by bobby deol, fix mood of movie
“Each body has its own Immune System. Government Bodies, Educational Bodies & Judicial Bodies have a very strong Immune system, which cannot hit from outside attack. They have to be rotted as disease from inside”
Our Take
This movie is overall good and less dramatic effort to show case Mumbai underworld growth during 1980’s but at the same time due to its shorten length (don’t know the reason) the movie doesn’t find time to grow in our mind and that’s where it fall shorts. Overall, a decent one time watch. There are few violent scenes and one obscene due to which kids should kept away from watch.
Verdict: One time watch
