Meant for the average bollywood lover who likes to see odd moves and emotions in a film, Desi Boyz is a typical Akshay Kumar starrer. Directed by Rohit Dhawan, who happens to be comedy expert David Dhawan’s son, the film is entertaining but the freshness which had been becoming the thing of the season is missing.
Akshay Kumar (Jerry) dons his ever favourite hat of being a useless guy who takes care of a small kid. The child (Veer) is Jerry’s nephew who loses both his parents. This is, perhaps, the only emotional side of the film because if he doesn’t do something, then Veer will be sent to a foster home. John Abraham (Nick) is a banker and in love with Radhika (Deepika Padukone) who dreams of a princess-like life. Recession strikes out of the blue (because the genre of the film implores you to keep your brains at home and not think at all) and both of them lose their jobs. Jerry worries that he will not be able to pay Veer’s fees and Nick has to fulfil Radhika’s dreams. So, they are forced to become escorts. Radhika discovers what Nick has been up to and leaves him. So, the film continues depicting Nick’s struggles to win back Radhika and Jerry joining a college to complete his education to get a good job, where he meets Tanya (Chitrangadha Singh), a teacher who is willing to remove one item of clothing for every correct answer he gives.
John and Akshay give a Dostana like performance showing guy love and using well-written dialogues that make you laugh. The story, on the whole, is pretty clichéd but witty dialogues and an amazing chemistry between John and Akshay make it a total time pass and paisa vasool bollywood flick. Deepika impresses as the narrator first and the shocked girlfriend later. Chitrangadha, however, does not succeed in casting her usual charms in her first mainstream role. Her acting seems somewhat forced and the role is quite an eyesore that one does not expect from her after her performances in brilliant movies like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Sorry Bhai. The film does not ask a lot from John and Akshay in terms of acting. They are supposed to gel well and their comic timing is impeccable, which is what the film demands of them.
So, for people who want to enjoy a day with their friends, this movie is a green signal. It makes you laugh and gives you light hearted comedy without taxing your brain too much. The music is average. John and Akshay fans would surely enjoy the dashing looks of both the actors. So, on a scale of 5, Desi Boyz gets a 3.5 in terms of entertainment.
