As apt as it could be, Love Aaj Kal is released on Valentine’s Day. The film is based on two love stories spanning from 1990 to 2020. Directed by Imtiaz Ali or rather re-directed by Imtiaz Ali, Love Aaj Kal is the remake of his original and most successful movie Love Aaj Kal which he directed way back
in 2009. We guess that the idea to recreate his own work may have sprung from the fact the original Love Aaj Kal had been one of his most successful film commercially (No, it wasn’t’ Jab We Met)
What’s the movie about?
Starring Kartik Aryan, Sara Ali Khan and Randeep Hooda, Love Aaj Kal is simply the copycat version of the original with a twist. The story tries to depict the difference between a simple love story of the yesteryears and complexities and problems people in love face in modern times. The movie looks as though it is lazily made, as there is hardly any improvisation in the screen play or songs.
Zoe Chauhan (Sara) plays a bubbly, fun loving 22 year old ambitious about her career and doesn’t want a committed relationship before reaching her career goals. Raghu (Kartik) is a small town guy who turns into a Casanova after coming to the big city. Veer (Kartik) is a meek character and lacks depth both in character and performance. Arushi Sharma who makes her debut in the industry as Leena effectively plays her role. (Randeep Hooda plays the character of Rishi Kapoor in the original movie.
Sara looks stunning in the movie but her performance could have been better. While Kartik does a fine job as Raghu, his performance as Veer is just about okay. Randeep Hooda steals the show with his performance.
What it’s not
The movie has non-aligned trajectory that moves back and forth, coupled with lack luster direction and screen play. Kartik and Sara Ali fans who expected a great chemistry are also likely to be disappointed. So, if you are expecting something new or unexpected from the movie, you will be seriously disappointed. The songs too fail to satiate the euphonic appetite of the listeners.
The Verdict
Imitiaz Ali adds yet another failure to his streak with Love Aaj Kal, after
miserably failing with Jab Harry Met Sejal.
The first half of the film is passable while the second is unduly stretched, making the viewers wonder when the film will end. Love Aaj Kal is also likely to put a brake to the winning streaks that Kartik had been enjoying thus far, while giving Sara Ali an out an out failure.
