Here is the first time director/writer Kiran Rao’s DHOBI GHAT….. produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions. The producers are both husband-wife Aamir Khan & Kiran Rao. Kiran Rao was not keen in taking Aamir Khan, but she didn’t find anyone better in the role of Arun.
The story revolves around 4 different people from different class and society and how they intersect in Mumbai’s famous place called DHOBI GHAT. Washers known as DHOBIS wash clothes in open for big hotels and hospitals. In fact, the unseen side of this city of dreams is been showcased. Kiran Rao…. portraits the city as it is and she gets under the skin to make it as realistic as possible. The shooting is done on the busy roads of Mumbai, so casting of actors was carefully chosen and therefore unknown faces were taken.
Talking about the storyline…… Pratik as Munna plays the role of Dhobi who is struggling to be an actor. Along his journey he meets Monica Dongra as Shia plays a photographer and a banker.
Shia meets Arun played by Aamir Khan who is a painter by profession, living in a small studio in Bhendi Bazaar. He’s a loner and wants to be on his own set of problems. His character shows him to be very reserved, who doesn’t get along with people. His eyes say a lot bringing so much depth, so much intensity. Most of the talk is done by his paintings.
As the story goes Arun meets Kriti as Yasmin.
Academy Award winning Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla has given the music. The music of the movie succeeds in connecting with the audience.
The movie releases on 21st January 2011. It’s a short hindi movie of 90 mins without an interval. This movie will certainly be proved to be a crafted piece of hindi cinema.
