Sony Liv and Hansal Mehta bring us one of the most famous scam of Dalal Street when entire nation was fascinated by the Big Bull (Harshad Mehta) and common man invested his hard earn money in the market and lost most of it. Scam 1992 is the 10 episodes web series ,the series is adapted from journalist Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu’s 1993 book The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away.
The Plot
The series shows the events in Harshad Mehta life (excellent act by Pratik Gandhi) from 1980-1992 and during those 12 years how from working for a sub broker as a jobber, he rise to become a broker and then start his own investment firm Grow More, under which he started investing the Debt market money of Financial Institutions like SBI and other banks into the stock market, and also start rotating the money of banks during settlement period just in form of bank receipts. With this central plot there are many sub plots which makes this series interesting. We can easily place this series as a crash course for people who are interested in stock market.
The Hits
We have seen many movies on stock market fraud and crash in past, but what made this web series different from them is the use of actual names as reference and that makes it more of a docudrama.
There is direct reference of ex PM Narsimha Rao. Banking Entities like SBI, Citi Bank, UTI and even some real names other than Harshad Mehta.
Performances: Pratik Gandhi lived the life of Harshad Mehta on screen. His arrogance, self-confidence, business decision making, Love for family everything comes alive on screen. With that there is other top-notch performance like CBI officer by Rajat Kapoor, Sucheta Dalal played by Shreya Dhanwanthary and many more. And this all was possible because of the vision that Hansal Mehta had while making his directorial master piece. The kind of detailing he did he did while defining the character and about the financial markets is simply clap worthy.
The Misses
Despite of good direction the editing also plays important role, which lacks in this series. There are 10 episodes with almost 50-60 min run time, which really makes audience lose the link in between. Had it been crisp editing with 5-6 episodes it’s impact would be four folded.
Our Take
Scam 1992 can easily be ranked in top 5 web-series of recent times which gives its audience the good insights in 1992 financial market and at the same time keep them entertained. However, the crisp editing could make this experience more beautiful. Recommended
